Average Retail Prices for the month of February 2017 in Kenya

As we have written before, the overall inflation rate stood at 9.04 percent in February 2017. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased by 1.67 percent from 176.93 in January 2017 to 179.88 in February 2017.

The price of Sifted Maize Flour is still on the rise. The average retail price for 2 Kg packet of sifted Maize Flour for the month of February was Ksh.126.8 as compared to Ksh.119.6 in the previous month of January. This represents an increase of approximately 6.0 percent. Similarly, the price was Ksh.113.79 in the month of September 2016. Since September last year, the price of sifted maize flour has increased by 12.3 percent. The same packet retailed at Ksh.105.5 at exactly the same period one year ago. This translates to an increase of 20.2 percent since February 2016.

Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) generated these figures using data collected during the second and third weeks of the month of January, 2017. The prices were obtained from selected retail outlets in 25 data collection zones which are located in Nairobi and in 13 other urban centres. KNBS has not given a list these retail outlets.
