Meru County joins Nairobi, Busia, Bomet and Uasin Gishu counties as the counties to watch

Other than the presidential race, there are a few gubernatorial races that will drive our adrenalines to the top. Whereas most people will be closely watching the results of the presidential race as they trickle in, those who will want full blast entertainment will also tune to the gubernatorial elections that will be going down in Busia, Bomet Uasin Gishu, Nairobi and now Meru County.

Other counties that may be of interest will be Kwale where the seating Governor is likely to be shown the door after decamping to Jubilee, Bungoma where Ken Lusaka, aligned to Jubilee in a NASA stronghold, will face off with his Ford Kenya and ODM counterparts, Homa-Bay, Kisumu and Siaya where incumbents are facing fierce competition from independents – although in Kisumu the incumbent is the independent candidate. Kirinyaga could have been an interesting county to watch but a recent poll by TIFA Research places former Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru way ahead of the iron lady, Martha Karua.

Before today, many would have thought that Governor Peter Munya was assured of victory. This is because most polls conducted online and through Meru radios have always placed Peter Munya way ahead of his rival – but the latest scientifically conducted opinion poll conducted by Infotrak places Peter Munya neck to neck with his closest rival, Meru County Senator Hon. Kiraitu Murungi at 42.0% and 40.7% respectively.

Other counties that were surveyed in the recent Infotrak Opinion Poll were Kisii County where the current Governor James Ongwae of ODM will carry the day with 60.1% of the votes, followed a distant second with his Jubilee rival Chris Obure at 16.9%, and Kajiado County where the current governor H.E. David Nkedianye of ODM will trounce his Jubilee counterpart Joseph Olelenku with 52.7% of the votes against Olelenku’s 41%.

The current county polls featuring Meru County, Kisii County and Kajiado County comes a week after the same research firm released opinion polling results for Kakamega County, Mombasa County and Uasin Gishu County. The research firm has also done polling for Murang’a County, and Bomet County where the current Governor Isaac Rutto of CCM was placed neck to neck with his arch rival Joyce Laboso of Jubilee.
