Kalasha Awards 2019 Winners, Full List

The 9th edition of the prestigious Kalasha Awards went down very well yesterday, November 30, 2019, at the Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi. The event which brought together government leaders, corporation officials, company executives, film and media players among other many dignitaries saw the awarding of individuals who have exhibited exemplary work in the film and TV industries.

The 170 nominees from 32 categories were selected among 959 entries that were submitted for the nomination between 20th August and 20th October 2019. The jury academy comprised of eight members with industry expertise necessary for quality selections. They were

  • RACHEAL DIANG’A an Assistant Professor of Film and the Chair of the Cinematic Arts Department. She holds a Ph.D. in Film Technology and has over fifteen years’ experience in film research and scholarship.
  • LINDA KARURU- leading producer, with over 15 years of experience in the TV & film industry.
  • FRED MAKORI – holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Graphic Design with professional training in Film & TV production. Has over 10 years’ experience in the media industry.
  • IRENE MUKONYORO- a Television Producer with a Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast Production from the University of Nairobi
  • KANG’ETHE MUNGAI- a Nairobi based film producer, director, and scriptwriter.
  • IRENE KARIUKI- founding Director of Performers Rights Society of Kenya (PRISK).
  • DENNIS MBUTHIA– game designer and animator at Adala Studios Ltd
  • DR. SIMON PETER VICTOR OTIENO- has a Ph.D. in performing arts and film studies from the University of Leeds UK.

Kalasha Awards 2019 was co-hosted by the Kenya Film Commission and the digital Television Company, StarTimes who forged partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding to support Kalasha. The Commission identified StarTimes ON, an online mobile application as a strategic platform where the shortlisted films were uploaded for viewing and public voting from 30th October to 30th November.

The StarTimes app, being the only voting means for Kalasha raised public concerns with many arguing that their audiences did not have access to smartphones, internet or could not be wanting to install the voting application.

All the winners in the just concluded Kalasha Awards received 50,000 each among many other goodies from the event sponsors.

□ Best Special Effects: Willis Wanyiri- Kitambo

□ Best Original Screenplay: Edijoe Mwaniki-Lost In Time

□ Best Feature: Lost In Time- Andrew Odera

□ Best Director of Photography: Abdi Shuria- The Whistle Blower

□ Best Documentary: My Cancer Story- Uncensored Mtaani- Elijah Kanyi, Africa Uncensored
