Kenya’s Presidential Results 2022 – William Samoei Ruto declared President-Elect

Yesterday after a long wait the IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati announced William Samoei Ruto as Kenya’s President-Elect after the August 2022 presidential election. According to Chebukati, William Ruto garnered 7,176,141 (7.18 million) votes which translated to 50.49% of the valid votes cast (or 50% plus 69,572 votes). Kenya’s constitution requires that the person declared the President-Elect by the electoral commission must garner at least 50% of the valid votes plus 1 vote, and at least 25% of the valid votes in at least 24 counties. William Ruto obtained at least 25% of the valid votes in 39 counties.

The closest opponent of President-Elect, Raila Odinga, obtained 6,942,930 of the valid votes which translates to 48.85%. At the time of writing this article, Raila Odinga had not conceded defeat. This is because Raila’s agents at the national tallying centre disputed the results, citing a number of issues including lack of access to form 34C which is the official form for declaring the presidential results. Four IEBC commissioners also walked out of the tallying centre and issued a press briefing stating that the final process of tallying the presidential vote was opaque.

Despite the controversy over the declaration of William Samoei Ruto as Kenya’s President-Elect, IEBC went ahead to publish the presidential results summarised by county. Below are the county results showing valid votes, votes for the two leading candidates (results for the third and fourth candidates are grouped under OTHERS), and the percentages each candidate scored in the counties. The totals for the candidates are shown at the bottom of the table.
