KRA intercepts uncustomed ethanol worth Kshs. 10.9 Million

Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) in collaboration with a multiagency team has intercepted a truck carrying a large quantity of uncustomed ethanol. The consignment was intercepted along the Kacheliba-Makutano route in West Pokot County after the team received a tip-off from the public. Upon investigation, the team discovered that the truck was carrying a total of 54 drums of ethanol, each containing 250 litres, with an estimated market value of approximately $108,000. The ethanol also had a tax implication of about $67,000. In addition to the ethanol, the truck was also found to be carrying 133 crates of empty beer bottles and 301 empty beer crates.

During interrogation, the truck driver claimed that he was transporting alcoholic beverages from Uganda to Kainuk. However, the consignment has been detained by the National Police Service as investigations continue. KRA is collaborating with multiagency teams to improve vigilance at the country’s ports of entry in order to promote legitimate trade, mobilize revenue, and protect society from harmful products. This recent interception is just one example of KRA’s efforts to combat the illegal trade of products such as ethanol, which can have negative consequences for both public health and the economy.
